The Evolution Of the Topshop Girl

The evolution of the Topshop girl is something I have seen change, expand and grow before my very own eyes. Always the covetable brand on the British High Street Topshop, unlike some of it’s other competitors always had an underlying ‘cool factor’ that emphasised that they didn’t need to try too hard to be cool, they just were and it was very evident in their clothes, marketing and even store layout.
However it wasn’t until 2006, the somewhat controversial decision came about that they decided to launch their own high end ‘designer’ collection at London Fashion Week, a collection that had all the Topshop ‘it-girl factor’ but was accessible as their 2 for £10 jersey promotion.

Entering into uncharted fashion waters was a risky move but one that has paid off tremendously.  All the public and media scrutiny enforced a change within the brand, from head office communications right down to the curtains in the fitting rooms. Topshop grew up. No longer where they that “scrawny bitchy fashionay girl” instead they embraced change, longer hem lengths and camera phone friendly lighting.
I entered into the Topshop world, as they were now beginning to roll out this change to all their nationwide stores. From a practical sense I know that unlike British boy-band pop legends ‘Take That’, Topshop will never really grow up, they will always continue to be the ones who cultivate style into young girls and women around the world who are yet to create their own personal style.
True, like with most brands or trends, people abuse these “fashion systems” and you have armies of girls and their friends walking down the streets all looking the same, but that’s where personal style comes in.  Topshop has those eccentric and dare I say it “unique” pieces, if you look hard enough. Usually the best stuff is at the back of the rail or beautifully curated in their ‘last chance to buy section” I personally love trawling through that section in every store-always something rare or ‘unseen' waiting to be introduced to the rest of your wardrobe.
A style timeline of some of the looks from their previous shows. There has definitely been some growth!

This brand growth or change can be seen more and more as I swift through images of their latest SS16 collection shown in September at London Fashion Week.  Unlike some of they’re previous less desirable collections, the touch of sophistication, refinement, ability to edit and purity of Kate Phelan has made the Topshop Unique collection one to watch out for season after season. The gimmicks and garish themes have been swapped for effortless chic, especially in regards to SS16. Fair enough not every piece is wearable, sure I’d get a few more whistles down the street in a red thigh high polka dot dress, but for the woman who knows her style-she doesn’t have to do to much to make it work with a Topshop Unique dress, and that is something to be credited for.
Some of my favourite looks from their SS16 runway..that pink leather coat looks so supple and needs to be mine...

When you think about more of the established fashion houses such as Gucci or Prada-you already know what comes to mind whether you shopped there or not is irrelevant, the identity of that brand has been long formed with or without you in mind. The generation we live in now, thanks to the use of the internet and social media means that a brand or company would be foolish to not listen too or recognise their consumers needs and wants when it comes to fashion, beauty and lifestyle. My personal view is that Topshop has made a smart move by being that ‘stepping stone’ fashion brand that caters to a majority who are yet to discover that in reality, they’d much rather consign with the design aesthetic of Junya Watanabe or be more inclined to pieces by Carolina Herrera.  In this, they never really have to allow their girl to grow up- she can flit and flutter between trends, cuts and even budget but she won’t stray too far, especially if the latest designer collab is something that’s going to introduce her to individuality.

Having left the company and allowing my fashion retail experience enhance my own style and approach to trends, I am very intrigued to see what they do going forward and for all the faults that they and many high street brands have, I’m sure they won’t lack for a new crop of girls to inspire, style and graduate them into the fun world of fashion as they leave their ‘girl’ days behind and enter ‘womanhood’.

No new clothes no no new.

All pieces from Topshop.com

In the words of Dj Khaled and Drake....No new clothes no no new clothes no no!
I'm on a clothing buying ban until October! :-(
This has been enforced by myself, in order to continue the motivation to get my collection finished.
However that doesn't stop me from spending time supposedly looking for inspiration (yeah right) on Topshop.com looking and refreshing the 'new in' page. Their upcoming trends for AW13 have absolutely soooo many lush pieces and alot of the trends include texture and alot of feminine touches. These days I've been inundated with a love for wedge shoes. I don't need them as most of the ones on sale are for summer, and I already own like 3 recently new pairs for ages that have never been worn (forgive me oh fellow shoe lovers out there, remember recovering shoeaholic and all etc lol) but the shoe angels out there keep throwing my attention towards them.
Impractical for the upcoming cold season, I have to remind myself that treking to work in the snow was not fun last time and I wore chelsea boots, so how I think that wedges would be any better...I must be crazy...mmm but driving in wedges can be done hehehe!
I'm not one for big massive prints and colours but the shock setting mustard shoes and scarf are totally nothing short of beautiful. The checks are incredibly versatile and a great way to do librarian chic but with a sexy twist by adding the green stilettos. And we all know that if I don't make myself a bangin' coat/jacket then this super gorgeous check wool boyfriend coatigan will be my next autumn coat !
Don't get me started on the jewellery. No that I also work for that department, I WILL be getting new pieces whether my bank manager likes it or not!
Looking forward to adding sequins to my daily wardrobe looks, it's not everyday I can dress like Cinderella or my style icon Diana Princess of Wales but I can add some of their glamour to some simple basics like a pencil skirt, will def make one because a-line and my luscious hips just ain't gonna work.
But all in all I'm looking forward to what AW13 has to offer on the high street and more so more excited for my collection too!

Checkin Out; Wishlist SS13

My deepest apologies to all of you, for the lack of my online presence, I can only put it down to work and family responsibilities that have kept me far away from my darling blog. However this absence has not stopped my avid desire to shop and virtually drool over alot of the high street pieces within the spring summer collections. As you can see, I'm having a bit of a love affair with all things nude and rose gold. Amping up my already plump lips with some Russian red lippy from M.A.C and keeping it chic with some sheer blouses and lingerie to boot. Topshop and River Island have both been providing stuff that I just have to get my hands on. My 'saved for later' basket on ASOS.com is full to the brim with Internet lusts that I soon aim to make mine. The picture above is displaying just a few pieces that I am requiring to be in my wardrobe and beauty box. Has there been anything from the Great British High Street that has been catching your eye of late?

The Galaxy at my feet.

I do promise you that I do buy and wear clothes :-) :-)  I think that shoes are just so much more interesting to buy/wear and blog about! Clothes are there to protect our beautiful curves and bumps from mother natures elements, and yes, in this civilization we currently reside in; clothes can be immensely beautiful as well as serve a purpose. However shoes are a different kettle of fish altogether! Sky high heels are not practical or a necessity-their hardly the best things to be wearing when pounding the pavements on the morning commute, neither are they biologically sound-otherwise God would have us all walk around the joint like ballerinas and all shoes would be shaped to accommodate such! But as unpractical, biologically dangerous and sky scraping high as they are; we or rather I have fallen in love with them.
These darlings were sitting there on the sale rack-minding their own business one Saturday evening, when I happened to walk past Topshop Flagship at Oxford Circus and in a twinkle of an eye the heaters at the front of the store, lured me in and my senses were awoken. Bright bold colour's strewn across mannequins in statement crop tees with zebras on them, jungle inspired hairstyles and boxy neoprene bags, passed me by as I casually descended down to the ground floor. They say that in life things come to you when you are neither looking for or needing them-and with this pair it was just like love at first sight and just my size and just the perfect price.
Have a lovely week all :-)

Wishing on a star...

Mulberry, navy blue and Khaki are colours that I am currently loving and are popping up in every highstreet aw12 collection. Topshop's jumpers are comfy but also a style statement with the studs, their oxblood boots are what I'm seriously crushing on the most, so yes, if I was wishing on small star I would just ask for the boots but if it's a shooting star then I'd want everything on this list!!!
Are you excited for what this AW12 season has to offer, if so tweet me about it!!

.....decided to have an off day in managing my funds. This is probably what I would spend my money on, just in Topshop.
Having had a sneak preview of their aw12 trends, I'm really excited for what Topshop has to offer this season!!

Style Guide.

Originally posted on Splerin.

With summer teasing itself to be here with this arrival of lush but rather humid weather, you wouldn’t be wrong to wonder what exactly to wear to keep cool but remain stylish. This particular style guide takes inspiration from Karl Largerfield’s Chanel resort 13 line. Extremely pretty and uber feminine but with a Lolita/bad girl twist.
Usually worn in winter, the classic Chanel tweed jacket has been updated with embroidery and appliqué in sugar-tastic colours like sherbet pink. Wear your knitwear in the same way but over a beautiful ombre dress for when the summer chill sets in. Florals, pastels and mermaid like textures all join to create a trend that can be easily interoperated into your weekend wardrobe!

Spring into the right coat.

Oversized lightweight Parka-Tosphop SS12 £68

With the last few days of glorious weather that we have been blessed with, it's been more than apparent to me that trudging the streets wearing a heavy fur lined parka(as beautiful and comfortable as it is) is just a sweaty fashion faux pas waiting to happen! So I have been on the hunt for the perfect spring coat. Harking at the SS12 Sports luxe trend a la Victoria Beckham with a 90's grunge element,it's lightweight, practical, stylish and versatile coming in at £68 the lucky winner is this Topshop beaut. It finding its way into my store and in my size was a sign that it was meant to be mine. Ultra roomy and light it allows you to enjoy spring dressing layering up your pieces for those chilly days and with a hood (although not waterproof) my hair won't have anything to shed a tear about. It's a coat relationship in heaven..very tempted to get it in navy blue :-)

Is a new spring coat on your wishlist?

It's just a little crush...

Even though there is still snow and ice outside my doorstep and temperatures are minus something, I can't help but be allowed to be lured into the high-street SS12 collections. Being whisked away into neon world, 90's cool and the ultra feminine trend which I like to call 'Little bo peep' these are just a few pieces that I'm totally crushing on. Some I've ordered and awaiting arrival and others I'm mentally buying them whilst some by hook or by crook 'I'll ave em!'
A collection of high-street based pieces from brands like Topshop, ASOS, River Island and Zara. An array of designer items on my wish-list is soon to follow assuring you of some astronomical prices but oh so fabulously chic and like totally amazing too! Louis Vuitton anyone? :-)

A month of Brick Lane, rainbows, snogging and Hermes!

No I haven't been getting randy in Brick Lane LOL. Apologies for  the lack of post's and slow responses to all your comment's but my outlandish title is basically one huge catch up on all the things I've been getting up too.

Recently finished an internship for a trend forecasting company which was amazing and my time there had me passing through London's famous Brick Lane;picked up a few fab vintage finds and  snapped up some 'Banksy' look-a-likes as well as a few other great murals. My favorite one being of the Shakespeare quote

'The object of art is to give life a shape'

I stumbled across Pigeons and Peacocks a newish magazine focusing on the creative side of life; from fine art to crazy fashions. I've recently got a job working at Topshop in my local area-so the rainbows and Starbucks are my working lunches (doing all my freelance stuff)and journey's home, it was such a magical moment I knew I just had to capture it.

Snog is a new desert company that's based in Covent Garden selling pro-biotic frozen yogurt. It's not groundbreaking but I thought the concept and design of the store was pretty cool-I mean-who would say no to a man in an apron with devilish good looks offering you a 'free snog'- GREAT marketing tool!!!

My yearly dose of art was topped up again with a lovely visit to V&A with my sister-with pre-museum visit drinks-was a smashing day. And now that I'm working; the first thing I'm saving up for is an Hermes Birkin-now that there's no longer a waiting list, my money is as good as anyone else's!! Bring on the delivery of an orange box to my door step-woop woop!!

Last but not least-a woman as fictitious as she is, has now been added to my style icon list none other than Mrs. Karen Walker- she's drunkenly fabulous and outspoken with a killer rack indeed, my love of Will and Grace has only grown!

So that's it peeps, I've been a busy little bee haven't I, and getting busier with all of the four fashion weeks to catch up on-what shows have you been dying to see?

Have a fashionably fabulous week!!!

Wild Child.

One of the biggest most wearable trends this season is what I like to call 'Wild Macrame dolls', with heavy western cowboy/bohemian influences with fringing, macrame detailing, Navajo prints and ruffles.  Roberto Cavalli, Anna Sui and Bluemarine  just to name a few, where the designers who gave the best looks in this trend.  From this trend I'm splurging and lusting over anything leopard printed, with stores like Topshop and Miss Selfridge offering up the best pieces it's hard to make a decision, but so far I've purchased this bag from ASOS.com perfect for uni and these lovely flats from s shop selling surplus stock!
